Pregnancy face mask: act quickly and well

How to react if you have a pregnancy mask on your face?

Not by panicking, but with gentleness and clairvoyance! The pregnancy mask on the face affects a minority of pregnant women. It's actually hyperpigmentation. Scientists call it “chloasma”… and expectant mothers “dreaded”. The fact remains that the pregnancy stain is temporary, even if it sometimes takes its time to dissipate. It can even be prevented thanks to a few good reflexes, including the sacred sunscreen. And if it's already too late, try a phytic acid peel.

What you know as a “pregnancy mask” (or “pregnancy stain”) is called a chloasma. These are more or less extensive brown spots that appear on the skin.
Their appearance mechanism is the same as for age spots, but their cause differs. It's about a overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment that defines the color of your complexion and gives you your tanning in summer. The melanocytes get carried away and push too much pigment towards the epidermis. Consequence: these small dark spots which can be difficult to remove, especially on areas exposed to the sun

What is the cause of pregnancy mask?

The answer is in the question: pregnancy! Getting pregnant causes many upheavals in your body. Unsurprisingly, the culprits are the same as your mood swings, breakouts or nausea: our friends hormones
As your baby grows, your body secretes more estrogen and progesterone. However, it turns out that these two substances are both involved in melanogenesis (read: the synthesis of melanin). Hence a boom in brown spots at the slightest ray of sunlight… or almost.

When does it appear?

This hyperpigmentation of the face and body generally appears at the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy. It is roughly around 5 months before giving birth that you are likely to notice an increase in brown spots.

However, nature is not an exact science! The appearance of chloasma arises largely from the biological specificities of each woman. For some mothers, it occurs in the first trimester. And for others (the majority, in fact), it never happens.

Is it possible to have a pregnancy mask without being pregnant?

Against all odds… yes! But then, logically, we prefer to talk about melasma. This is a benign dermatological condition: it is not very aesthetic, but is not serious in itself. The royal road to paying the price: inconsiderate exposure to the sun. Take it easy on the sunbathing, then.
But it can also occur following a hormonal imbalance, induced for example by a medical treatment. This happens to some women who take a pill with a high dose of estrogen. That being said, even men are sometimes affected by these pigment spots!

How do you recognize chloasma on the face?

Although it can extend to the neck, armpits and stomach, the facial pregnancy mask remains the most common. His favorite seats are the cheekbones, But also the temples et forehead. If you combine the three zones, you have what is poetically called a “wolf mask”.
You may also end up with stains on the the upper lip (mustache). In some advanced cases, chloasma is so extensive that it covers the entire face. You therefore better understand its name as a pregnancy “mask”.

Are you one of the women most affected?

Pregnancy spots are believed to affect 1 out of 20 French people. They mainly concern women with dark complexions. Please note: just because you have a light phototype (blonde hair, pale skin) does not mean you will be spared. On the other hand, you have less risk of developing chloasma.

Less encouraging: you have already had brown spots during your previous pregnancy ? So, you should know that there is a high probability that you will have them again if you become pregnant again. But as you read this, you will be better equipped to face them. 😉

Before childbirth

“If you want peace, prepare for war. » The more you know about pregnancy facial masks, the better you will be able to prevent or even avoid pregnancy masks! The most important thing to understand is that the sun plays a big role in its appearance. It's physiological: UV activates the production of melanin.

Apply a daily SPF50 sunscreen to combat UV rays. Choose yours carefully, as some filters and cosmetic ingredients are not recommended during pregnancy. Some controversial undesirables: benzophenone-3, 4-Methylbenzylidene camphor.

  • Be gentle with your skin. Avoid mishandling it with mechanical scrubs or overly “stripping” cleansers. By weakening your skin's natural defenses, you make it more vulnerable to external aggressions, including ultraviolet rays.

  • Adopt an anti-spot diet. Look for foods rich in antioxidants, zinc and vitamin C (green tea, grapes, citrus fruits, cocoa, etc.). Researchers have established a link between the ingestion of flavonoids and the inhibition of glycation (“driver” of skin aging).

After childbirth,

Bad news: the pregnancy facial mask has hard skin. It therefore does not go away overnight, even once your pregnancy is over. Worse: it can get worse during the breastfeeding period, which causes hormonal peaks. It would therefore be a shame to relax your efforts.

  • Continue to protect yourself from the sun. Whether you are pregnant or not, wearing an SPF is a sine qua non condition to apply in all circumstances. Limit any exposure to the sun as much as possible to avoid accentuating a mask already installed.

  • Review your beauty routine. Give pride of place to lightening active ingredients to reduce the intensity of your brown spots. Do not hesitate to use a serum to “boost” the performance of your treatment protocol. And of course, moisturize your skin religiously.

“Radical” solutions against chloasma

Are your spots still there more than 6 months after giving birth? Think about aesthetic medicine. The following treatments are based on the intervention of a dermatologist or health professional. They must therefore be subject to prior medical consultation.
  • Depigmenting cream. These are often medicated hydroquinone creams. This substance is in fact known to inhibit tyrosinase (the enzyme which is involved in melanogenesis). It lightens the skin with each application.
  • Dermatological peeling (often with fruit acids, AHA). It consists of eliminating the most superficial layers of the epidermis. It allows you to gradually erase lentigo and regain a more uniform complexion.
  • The laser. It breaks up the clumps of melanin causing the brown spots in the pregnancy mask. You will likely need to schedule several sessions before you see visible results. Note that this technique is the most expensive of the three.

Natural solutions against pregnancy mask

Do you want to do things in a “softer” way? Use targeted cosmetics to help yourself. If you have not yet given birth, do not apply any treatment to your skin. Favor “clean” beauty products. Of course, make sure they are compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • An anti-brown spot serum. It contains active ingredients intended to reduce the appearance of pigment spots. Give your skin time to regenerate for a complete cycle (28 days) to admire the 1ers results on the intensity of pigmentation.
Revitalizing serum Booster cell turnover with rice phytosterols. Suitable for pregnant women.
    • An enzymatic scrub or peel. Enzymes and acids have the ability to “nibble away” at dead cells on the surface of the skin. Peels are therefore ideal for bringing a splash of gradual freshness to your uneven complexion.
Perfecting peel “New skin effect” lotion with rice phytic acid. Compatible with pregnancy.
      • A treatment for the eye area. The wolf mask tends to give a tired look to the face. To brighten your eyes, use a suitable eye contour treatment. Focus on antioxidant active ingredients to protect against premature skin aging.
Revitalizing eye treatment Antioxidant shield with fermented rice water. Usable during pregnancy.
